Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck as it is commonly referred to, is an operation that is designed to reshape the abdomen. Often, through weight gain and loss, pregnancies, and aging, the skin stretches beyond its elastic limit or ability to return to normal shape. Muscles also get pulled apart but never go back to original position. An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat while underlying muscles are tightened.

The actual placement of incisions and design of the abdominal incision varies depending on the excess of the skin and the underlying tissues, the condition of the overlying skin, and prior scars.

For those women whose sagging skin is mainly in the lower abdomen, the mini-abdominoplasty is an option, however, the muscles do not get addressed with this procedure and is not as extensive as a full abdominoplasty due to a smaller incision that is easily hidden under a two piece bathing suit. This procedure offers a more rapid recovery, is done on an outpatient basis, and is often performed under straight local anesthesia.

Who is a Candidate for abdominoplasty?

  • Individuals with realistic expectations

  • Physically healthy individuals at a stable weight

  • Individuals with loose or sagging abdominal wall skin.

  • Individuals with abnormal relaxation of the anterior (front) abdominal wall muscles due to weight gain or loss, pregnancies, or prior surgery.

Intended Results of Abdominoplasty

  • A smoother flatter abdomen.

Procedure Description for Abdominoplasty

  • Anesthetic options include local anesthesia with oral sedation, conscious sedation, and general anesthesia.

  • Incisions

  • Mini-abdominoplasty can most always be performed under conscious sedation straight local anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

  • Standard abdominoplasty tightens all of the abdominal wall skin and abdominal muscles using a standard incision.

  • Mini-abdominoplasty tightens the lower abdominal wall skin only leaving a shorter scar where possible.

  • Small suction drains may be inserted with both procedures.

REGULAR TUMMY TUCK

Regular Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck is meant to improve both the upper and lower abdominal sections. The best candidates for a full tummy tuck are people with weakened abdominal muscles or excess skin around their midsection. This procedure can flatten and contour the areas above and below their belly buttons.

A Regular tummy tuck includes:

  • Making a small umbilical incision that is not externally visible, but gives the patient an innie belly button

  • Positioning a short, low waistline incision that can be easily hidden by the patient’s underwear and swimwear

  • Removing the necessary skin

  • Tightening the abdominal muscles

Recovery:

It is one of the most frequently asked questions about tummy tucks, as patients are concerned about getting back to their routine life as soon as possible. As with all surgeries, recovery time depends on the age, fitness, and general health of the patient. You will be asked to wear a compression garment around the midsection for several weeks to promote a quicker and healthier recovery. You may also need drainage tubes under your skin for a few days.

Recovery time typically takes a minimum of two weeks. I will advise you to rest for at least two weeks. You can resume most activities after 3 weeks and start exercise after 6 weeks. You must avoid lifting anything that would make you strain.

CIRCULAR TUMMY TUCK

Circular Tummy Tuck

Also known as belt lipectomy – is the most comprehensive (and invasive) of all 3 main types of a tummy tuck. This procedure addresses both the lower and upper abdomen along with the entire waistline (including the flanks and the back). This holistic procedure is common with patients who have lost a great deal of weight – possibly after a gastric bypass surgery or other types of bariatric (weight loss) surgery. On this page, we explore what a circumferential tummy tuck is and what you can expect from this procedure.

Ideal candidates for a circular TT

Circumferential abdominoplasty is a type of tummy tuck that is designed to remove loose skin and excess tissue from the abdomen, lower back, waist, and buttocks region. The purpose of this procedure is to achieve massive transformation to a person’s physique after they have undergone massive weight loss. You may be a good candidate for this cosmetic surgery if:

  • You are physically and emotionally healthy

  • You have had bariatric surgery to address morbid obesity

  • You have lost 70 pounds or more worth of weight

  • You are troubled by an overabundance of skin and excess fat in areas that are otherwise difficult to tone, such as the buttocks, outer thighs, and abdomen.

  • You have realistic expectations about the outcome of this cosmetic surgery

Keep in mind that patients who have mild to moderate abdominal protrusion and excess skin may not benefit from this surgery. Circumferential abdominoplasty is exclusively designed for formerly obese patients who desire to remove extra skin and fat, as well as add muscle tone in order to accentuate their newly found slimmer bodies.

Recovery:

Patients who undergo this extremely invasive type of abdominoplasty need to stay at the hospital for 2-4 nights. Drainage tubes will be placed in order to drain away excess fluid from the incision sites.. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the entire treatment area is common following this cosmetic surgery. I will provide pain medication to ease the discomfort as well as antibiotics to prevent an infection. You should walk slowly as soon as you are able to in order to reduce the risk of blood clots. Most circumferential tummy tuck patients are able to resume light activities within 4 weeks. However, you should wait until you get the green light from us (which may take as long as 10 weeks) before you resume strenuous activities.

MINI TUMMY TUCK

Mini Tummy Tuck

As compared to a full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck only addresses the lower part of the abdomen, the area below the belly button. People who are not happy with the pooch, loose skin, or stretch marks below their belly button are good candidates for a mini tummy tuck.

Most people who undergo a mini tummy tuck are often close to their ideal weight. However, they are frustrated by the stubborn fat between the pubic area and navel that does not seem to go away no matter how rigorously they exercise and diet, and seek a long-term solution.

 Mini tummy tuck involves:

  • Making a small horizontal incision between the hipbones

  • Removal of excess skin

  • Tightening of the underlying muscles

A mini tummy tuck procedure does not reposition the belly button, as any excess skin, fat or muscle laxity above the belly button is not addressed.

Recovery:

As it covers a lesser area than the full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck takes less recovery time. Healthy patients can heal in about 2 weeks and get back to their normal routines after a few weeks but strenuous activities should not be undertaken until at least 6 weeks following surgery.

EXTENDED TUMMY TUCK

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck has all the components of a full tummy tuck, but it also improves the patient’s flanks in addition. It is an effective treatment for people who have lost a substantial amount of weight and want to refine the contours of their bodies.

Ideal candidates for an extended tummy tuck often have:

  • Too much excess skin hanging from their upper and lower abdomen and flanks often weighing several pounds

  • Too much laxity in their abdominal muscles

Extended tummy tuck patients can also benefit from liposuction. Liposuction is usually performed on the hips, love handles, and flanks during the tummy tuck procedure to help patients achieve their ideal body contour.

It is essential to note that an extended tummy tuck leaves a longer incision than a full tummy tuck, as it has a larger scope. The good news is that the scar from the surgery can be hidden by clothing or swimsuits.

Recovery:

The recovery time for an extended tummy tuck is about the same as a full tummy tuck which is about two to three weeks at a minimum due to longer incisions and more extensive tucking. Also, it may take longer for the scar to fade.

FDL TUMMY TUCK

Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck

This type of tummy tuck gets its name from the shape of the incision made by the surgeon during the procedure. I do an incision shaped like the petals of a Fleur-De-Lis to remove excess fat and skin from the midline of the abdomen.

A Fleur-De-Lis tummy tuck is usually recommended for people who have been through dramatic weight loss and have a combination of vertical and horizontal laxity.

They also have a lower roll of loose skin like people with full tummy tuck candidates, but there is additional looseness from side to side.

This tummy tuck type involves two incisions. One incision is made along the pubic bone, while the other is a vertical incision that runs along the middle of the abdomen.

The extra incision allows the surgeon to tighten the patient’s skin from side to side as well as up and down and improve the look of the abdomen.

Recovery:

Patients undergoing this tummy tuck type are advised to rest for 2 to 3 weeks and avoid all exercise until 6 weeks after the surgery.

It is because a great deal of skin is removed during the procedure, and healing can take longer time, due to the vertical and horizontal incisions.
